Floyd’s Power Meter, Stage 17

24 July 2006

I had the incredible opportunity to sit in on a teleconference with Floyd Landis this morning, winner of the Tour de France 2006 (as if I need to say that). I asked him how much he relied on his power meter during the Tour, he basically said that the race-pace dictates his speed most of the time, but on Stage 17 he did use it to gauge his efforts. He mainly used the power-meter for post-stage analysis and how to gauge his training. So, for all those that think racing with a power meter is either of no value or is too heavy, think again! Next time you go on a solo flyer off the front, I’ll bet you’ll wish you had your power meter!

Oh one last thing, I noticed he raced the whole day with his jersey zipped and I asked him about this, he said he usually doesn’t unzip his jersey much and that the wind was so hot it really didn’t help cool him anyway. The 60 some bottles he poured on his head that day was the key to keeping cool.
