The Praying Mantis and Old School Power Meters
11 July 2006Rummaging through some old boxes this weekend turned up a stash of late 80’s cycling Magazines. Remember “Winning” ??
Curiously, two things caught my eye. One is the ad for a Look Max One cycling computer, and it was a power meter! Very similar it seems to the Power-Tap, but apparently it was way ahead of it’s time and didn’t prove to be a commercial success.
Here is a scanned ad for the Max One from a 1989 issue of Winning.
The other interesting thing I ran across was a picture of Greg LeMond, curiously in a very similar aero position as Floyd Landis’ much talked about “Praying Mantis” position. Though not as pronounced, it is interesting to see Greg with the upturned aero bars and in a very similar position.
No doubt, the more things change, the more things stay the same. It also shows truly what a pioneer LeMond was in his day.

I still have this edition. What a Classic. That Look thing was cool, but nobody knew how to use it…
