My Routes: Improved Mapping, Sorting and Comparing
2 November 2007As many customers know, TrainingPeaks makes it very easy to upload data from a Garmin GPS device, making it super simple to track your planned vs. actual workout information. Along with getting an interactive map and graph of your workout, you can also save that activity as a “route”. The “My Routes” feature lets you group workouts together as routes enabling you to compare your efforts over the same course, sort the routes by distance, name etc. and, in times when you don’t have a GPS device with you, you can even build a route map using our Course Creator. The new and improved My Routes section makes it fun to compare all your workouts, with and without a GPS device.
You’ll find the My Routes main page under Preferences, My Routes:

Working with Routes:
The simplest way to create a route, is to use an existing workout that has an uploaded GPS file. While you can use any workout, with or without a GPS file, it makes it more fun to see your actual course on the interactive map, so, we’ll start there. After uploading your GPS file, you can see on the Daily Log (Training, Daily Log) the “Routes” drop down menu.

Simply click the “Create route from this workout” link and you’ll have a new route created that you can edit and save. You can now edit your new route as shown below:

Clicking “Submit” will save this as a new route. From now on, anytime you do a workout, and select this route on the Daily Log, your workout will be grouped to this route. This makes it easy to see what your workouts look like, review total mileage and time, and easily go back to those days when you did these workouts.
Below is the main “My Routes” page, note that it shows you how many times you’ve saved a workout as this route. Also note that the page can be sorted by the column headers, and, depending on the speed of your internet connection, you may want to turn off the mapping.

Clicking the “View all XX Workouts” link shows you all the workouts performed on that Route:

From here, you can click the date to go directly to the Daily Log for that day. If you happen to like the map of a different day’s workout, you can click the “Set as Master” to change the primary map for this route.
If you don’t have a GPS, no problem!
The My Routes feature doesn’t need a GPS file, or even a map to be useful. You can simply create a route, with no map at all, and use it to easily group workouts. Or, you might want to create a route using a mapping tool, like our Course Creator. We can upload any standard .gpx file, which many “manual mapping” sites are able to export. Using Course Creator, you can simply build your route then export the .gpx file. Upload the .gpx file to your Daily Log and create a route from there like normal.
Special thanks to TrainingPeaks super user Barry Shotts for these screen shots (hey no wonder we used him! :-), he’s the king of routes with over 100 created over the years.
Let us know how you use routes.. we hope you find the feature useful and fun in your day to day training.
