TrainingPeaks Users Take 1st and 3rd in Men’s Aussie Road Champ’s

15 January 2008

Lloyd Victory

TrainingPeaks users Matthew Lloyd (Team Silence-Lotto) and Rory Sutherland (Team Health Net) placed 1st and 3rd respectively this past Sunday in the Australian Elite National Road Race Championship. Lloyd made an impressive solo bridge to the early breakaway group and went on to attack the lead group and ride the final 20km solo. Sutherland ended up placing 3rd when he was nipped at the line by Team High Road’s Adam Hansen, which is tough do do considering Sutherland’s max watts in the sprint was 1375watts!

Sutherland not only placed 3rd in the Road Championships, but he also earned a silver medal in the men’s time trial a few days earlier. He explained the road race course as “16 laps of a 10km circuit. 3kms of climbing every lap straight up! Hard as hell that thing.” That is an understatement! Sutherland averaged over 400w every lap up the climb for more than five minutes. His entire race equated to an enormous 381 normalized power for 4+hrs.

in his recent book, floyd landis states that he averaged 280 watts over 5 hours during his infamous testosterone TdF stage win. how does this square with 380 watts over 4 hours by a non-TdF contender?

  2. junior Says:

normalized power is much higher than avg power of the ride. For example, a few days ago my avg power over 6h ride was 226watts while normalized power reached 270watts.

  3. Andrew Coggan Says:

The 280 W provided by Landis is for his *average* power, whereas Sutherland’s *normalized* power was 381 W. That’s in addition to the fact that Sutherland likely outweighs Landis by a large margin.

  4. pn Says:

The slope of Sutherland’s SRM was probably off.

  5. bc Says:

kc: You gotta remember that over those four mountain passes there were a number of long descents, too, which will affect the average power.
