2008 Cycling Science Symposium Presentations by Hunter Allen & Joe Friel Now Available
4 March 2008Hunter Allen, co-developer of TrainingPeaks’ WKO+ software and Joe Friel, one of the founders of TrainingPeaks were both invited to present at the 2008 Cycling Science Symposium that was held January 27-30, 2008 in Denver, Colorado.
The slides from their presentations have recently been made available to the public and may be viewed here.
Joe Friel’s presentation Steady State Training and Racing addressed Slightly Negative Splits, Minimal Power Variability and Minimal Power:Heart Rate Drift (Decoupling). All three topics are important indicators for successful steady state training and racing. Joe described Slightly Negative Splits and why athletes who follow this 51/49 Principle have historically posted the best times. In his discussion of Minimal Power Variability, Joe outlined the Variability Index (VI) as a measure of steady vs erratic pacing and when this metric should be watched. Finally, Joe described Minimal Power:Heart Rate Drift (Decoupling) as a measure by which to measure aerobic endurance. A more in-depth discussion of Decoupling can be found here: http://www.cyclingpeakssoftware.com/power411/decoupling.asp.

Hunter Allen’s presentation Form and Power Based Training outlined the benefits of training and racing with power. He explained Training Stress Score (TSS), how to calculate TSS and why it is an important and necessary metric to use when training with power. Intensity Factor (IF) and Normalized Power (NP) are two additional power training tools Hunter discussed. Hunter then explained the benefits of the Performance Manager Chart found in WKO+ and how the calculation Form=Fitness+Freshness is key to optimizing your training.
