Training with Technology: Lady Spartans go to State!
6 November 2008
After first starting to train with technology during the 2008 track season, Coach Briana Boehmer is now working with the Lady Spartans Cross Country Team and their Head Coach Kim Leupold to continue enhancing the team’s training. By teaming up with TrainingPeaks, the Spartans are using GPS and heart rate monitors as a way to train more
intelligently. During the 2008 track season, Coach Boehmer saw the benefits of adaptive training with technology when nearly every runner on the team hit a personal best by mid-season, guided by an increased awareness of pace that allowed Coach Boehmer to more accurately deliver workouts. This fall, the team has continued improving through training with technology, and cross country runner Claire Lippe set her sights for the season on helping the whole team get to state, where they raced last weekend. Aside from helping the team make it to the state meet this year, Claire also hopes to improve throughout her high school career. Although she has no plans to run in college, she believes she will always love running. “Past high school I don’t think I will participate in college because of other things I want to do, but I know I will always run because it is such a huge part of my life.”
Claire enjoys both the peacefulness and the thrill of running. “When I go out for a run I have an opportunity to think about things. I also love the feeling of accomplishment after a workout.” More recently, she has gotten into using GPS technology to help her train. When she first started using it, her initial
impression was simply, “Large, but fantastic!” Now she really enjoys the power of training with technology. “It truly is a God send. Not only can I map out our runs, but I also can keep track of my pace which helps me stay consistent and motivated to push myself.”
Aside from running, Claire enjoys many other activities. “I LOVE to be outside. I am also an avid reader, movie watcher, music lover, artist, and activist for environmental issues and bettering the lives of others.” Describing herself as motivated, open, and observant, Claire realizes the importance of making good choices now to prepare for the future. “I have a very good work ethic and a willingness to listen. I have realized the decisions I make today will affect me in the future.” Happy running and more in the future, Claire!
