New TrainingPeaks member Bruce Young improves efficiency in training!

9 December 2008

thegirls Bruce started competing in triathlons over two decades ago, but it’s only in the last two months that he has found a way to fit his training schedule in around his busy life, by using TrainingPeaks and Coach Scott McMillan from Factor9 Triathlon Coaching. “I started doing triathlons 22 years ago. After my wife had triplet daughters 21 years ago, life’s priorities dramatically changed and I left the sport. I was able to return to the sport 5 years ago…I have been working with Factor9 and TrainingPeaks for two months now and love the structure that both provide. The software and Scott’s planning have allowed me to fit my workouts around the other aspects of my life. My family has commented that they are enjoying having me around more this year compared to the past few years.”image

Increased efficiency certainly doesn’t mean less training for Bruce, just training smarter. Describing the structure of his training plan, Bruce remarks, “I do most of my training solo using a polar s625x and my trusty ipod nano. I have three swim sessions per week, 3 runs, 4 bikes and two weight sessions. In the past my swims consisted of swim lengths. Scott has provided me with comprehensive progressive swim workouts. I am spending more time on the bike this year compared to the past. Scott reviews my progress and the sessions are adjusted based on my feedback.”

The structure of his training schedule and the feedback provided by his coach have really helped Bruce keep his training on track and focused on achieving his goals. “Scott uses TrainingPeaks as part of his coaching services. My goals are to improve on both my half and full Ironman times. All workouts are scheduled in TrainingPeaks and keep me on track as well as focused. Scott is able to review my workout feedback in TrainingPeaks and respond quickly. I would recommend the software.”

Not only is Bruce excited about the training log functionality of TrainingPeaks, but he is also interested in learning more about the advanced nutrition tracking features that the software has to offer. “I am looking forward to using some of the other features of the software. I feel that I have not raced at an ideal race weight yet and look forward to seeing if TrainingPeaks can help me in that area also.”

Although he certainly enjoys the competitive side of the sport, Bruce also enjoys training for triathlons because of the lifestyle benefits. “I would say that I am a life style athlete. The sport allows me to maintain a decent level of fitness. I also enjoy the competitive aspect of the sport.”

Happy training, Bruce!
